The proposed Park & Ride (or ‘multi-modal interchange’, to use the technical term), is proposed within Mereham New Community, close to the access from the A10 in the Redhill Park neighbourhood (click here for more information on Mereham’s neighbourhoods).

This facility will eventually grow to provide 1,000 car parking spaces, and 500 spaces will be made available from the commencement of Mereham.

The key objective of the interchange is to provide a transfer point between motorised and non-motorised forms of transport. Integration between rural bus services and a high frequency bus services to Cambridge will improve the cost effectiveness and efficiency of rural services, as they will no longer have to make the journey into Cambridge (click here for more details on the proposed public transport improvements).

The siting of the interchange will make it particularly attractive to car users currently using the A10, as it will be highly accessible and offer a real choice of quality public transport to those travelling to Cambridge or Ely from the Fenland towns and villages. The creation of a fast, direct service to the rail stations at Ely and Cambridge will also offer residents the opportunity to use public transport to reach destinations further afield.

State-of-the-art information systems will be installed to inform passengers on the expected arrival of services, and the interchange will have secure cycle parking and waiting facilities.

The interchange will also be closely related to shopping, leisure and employment within Mereham. This will ensure that the facility is not isolated from the rest of the new community and that people can reach it easily on foot. The internal bus route with Mereham will also link to the interchange, so that it is accessible to residents living in all neighbourhoods.
